A history of South African Pop and Rock music from 1960 to 1990, compiled by Gallo Special Projects (led by Derek Smith) with sleeve notes by Tom Jasiukowicz.
Originally released as a 3CD box set to accompany Garth Chilvers and Tom Jasiukowicz’s book, History of Contemporary Music of South Africa, The Best Of South African Pop was packaged in a slipcase, with each disc featuring a distinct colour: yellow (disc 1), red (disc 2), and blue (disc 3).
Subsequently, disc 1 was reissued with a new second disc as The Best Of SA Pop Volume 1. Discs 2 and 3 were also re-released together as The Best Of SA Pop, Volume 2. Both volumes later saw further re-releases in 1997 with updated cover art, along with a third double CD in the series, The Best Of SA Pop, Volume 3, compiled by Malcolm Lombard.
