The Ndlovu Youth Choir has made history with their stunning isiZulu rendition of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” This South African choir released the world’s first officially approved translation of the iconic rock anthem, with Queen’s surviving members and the Mercury Phoenix Trust giving their blessing.
The Ndlovu Youth Choir, which began in South Africa’s rural Limpopo province and rose to international fame on America’s Got Talent in 2019, has transformed one of rock’s most beloved songs into a powerful African celebration. The choir has reimagined Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” entirely in isiZulu, creating what many describe as a goosebump-inducing performance that honours both the original masterpiece and African musical traditions.
Musical arranger Ralf Schmitt posed the compelling question: “what might Bohemian Rhapsody have sounded like if Freddie Mercury’s musical journey never left the continent of his birth?” The result is a breathtaking fusion that brings Queen’s timeless epic to life through the rich harmonies and cultural depth of South African choral tradition, making this release a truly historic moment in music.
The track is included on the “From Limpopo To The World” 4-track EP released 29 August.
