Just off the end of the shortwave radio dial (on the right-hand side) is where true believers search for the soetegeur signal of mythic, trans-Boerradio station, Radio Kalahari. If youʼre lucky enough to find it, stay tuned, because you may well hear the famous house band, Die Radio Kalahari Orkes, who stand proudly under their motto:
‘n Honderd Jaar Agter Die Tye.. en Oppie Spoor.
The one-of-a-kind Radio Kalahari Orkes is visiting the Cape from 26 – 28 March. It is the Orkes’ first Cape tour since the release of their hit album, Heuningland, at the end of last year. Heuningland fever hit SA with a bang, with five tracks from Heuningland playlisted on RSG, a number of television appearances and a 2010 SAMA-nomination in the category Best Adult Contemporary Album: Afrikaans.
Their music stems from a place diep in die grond, taking in Afrikaans Malay liedjies, boeremusiek and anything else useful found lying in the roadside dust. The words, however, are focused firmly on the present. Played on acoustic equipment as old as old as their motto, the band’s sound features violins, accordions, consertinas, mandolins, banjos, washboards, guitars, dobor, trompette, kontrabas, kazoes – and Jan Vasmaak’s patented East Cape ‘Boozophone’. It is a musical style that makes you want to get up and dance (and occasionally weep).
