In early 1999, I met with Derek Smith from Gallo, and he asked for my opinions and ideas for a South African Disco compilation. In July 1999, Disco Fever was released with a credit to me in the booklet – 40 years old and I was starting a new career!

Review
by Brian Currin, 1999
In the late 70s disco music internationally was dominated by such artists as The Bee Gees, Donna Summer, Chic, Gloria Gaynor, Village People, etc. The rhythm was everything and musicianship was secondary.
In South Africa, however, disco seemed to take on a distinct harder edge, with a number of classic hard rock and heavy metal songs being given the disco treatment. Paul Ryan’s classic ‘Eloise’ was extended to 17 minutes by Zane Cronjé’s Rouge, HOT RS covered Iron Butterfly’s ‘In-A-Gadda-Da -Vida’ (cleverly combining it with Frankie Vaughan’s 1957 UK #1 smash hit ‘Garden Of Eden’) and Peter Vee’s Buffalo covered Steppenwolf’s heavy metal anthem ‘Born To Be Wild’.
Ex-Rabbitt Trevor Rabin with his Disco Rock Machine recorded the Kinks’ ‘You Really Got Me’ while his colleague, Neil Cloud (Rabbitt’s drummer), covered ‘Time Of The Season’ originally done in 1968 by Rod Argent’s Zombies.
All these tracks and others (like John Ireland’s ‘Living Inside My Head’) are on this Gallo collection compiled by Derek Smith.

Hi Brian
Every couple of years I go looking for this album on the net, hoping Gallo will finally re-release it as the line up of tracks has always had me spellbound, without a doubt one of the best “rock-disco” compilations ever imagined (from the individual tracks I have managed to find elsewhere) so its gratifying to finally congratulate someone who was responsible for the album.
Given it is out of print, have you ever thought of releasing it on the net? I am just planning a new music blog and it would be wonderful to have this compilation as a first post (and then maybe once Gallo see the huge resurgence of interest in this particular style of disco they may re-release it) or failing that I would be more than happy to pay you for a high quality rip of the album in CD format (or as 320 bitrate MP3 files that could be sent over the net, I am in England).
Just out of curiousity, how many copies of this album was sold? (it gives me an idea of the stastical chances of a copy ever appearing on the market!)
Apologies for bombarding you with questions, its just so exciting to read your comments.
Best Wishes
Paul Harvey
Best to chat to Gallo about re-releasing this album.
HI
I am looking to find “You’re living inside my head” by John Ireland on MP3 or CD. I still have the 7″ single of that song but would love to have an electronic version. Anybody can help me find it?
Regards from Switzerland!
Very difficult to find nowadays … it appeared on a few CD compilations that are out of print now, and it is not available digitally on RhythmMusicStore.com, as it has not been authorized by the record label concerned.
