He’s done a symphony. He’s written incidental music. He was part of the 70s South African music revolution—and now Kenny Henson is guiding the sounds of Freedom’s Children back into the future.

So far, 20 songs have been put on tape in Johannesburg’s Downtown Studios, and mixing of the album, titled Mummies, should be completed by mid-September. And Kenny is excited—not only by the music the new Freedom’s are making, but by the prospect of touring with the group.

He told me from Johannesburg today: “I came up here some months ago with 18 demo songs, done on my 8-track at home in Durban. Freedom’s Children stalwarts Brian Davidson, Ramsay McKay, and I went into Neil Solomon’s Passage One studio and laid down five tracks. It was exciting stuff, and I was able to meet with Gallo managing director, Charles Kuhn, who signed us on the strength of the demos.

“Then we got together with three great, young musicians who had just completed varsity—Jonathan Neaves (24) on drums, Kobie van Tonder (22) on keyboard and programs, and Bruce Muirhead (24) on bass. So we were set, with Ramsay on guitars and vocals, Brian doing vocals, and I, guitars and synths. We have been living and working in a house in the outer suburbs of Johannesburg, rented by Gallo.”

Kenny says of the 20 songs—13 done in Durban and seven new ones done in Johannesburg—14 will be selected for the new album. “It is difficult to describe the music, except that there is a strong cross-section of styles from 60s rock to more psychedelic sounds.”
