Comments
This superb compilation from EMI South Africa was released in March 1994. It was part of the excellent “Platinum” series which included compilations from such diverse artists as Jethro Tull, Uriah Heep, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jim Croce, Don McLean, Cliff Richard, and The Hollies.
Great sleeve notes from an uncredited author on 25 years of Deep Purple. The booklet includes a number of album covers, however only covers that feature the band member’s faces (however distorted) are included. In other words: “Shades Of Deep Purple”, “In Rock”, “Fireball”, “Machine Head”, “Burn” and “Come Taste The Band”. Strange, but true!
I highly recommended this CD as a great introduction to Deep Purple’s studio work.
In 2005, EMI unveiled The Platinum Collection, a comprehensive 3-CD set. This collection largely mirrored the tracklist of the South African “Platinum” CD, with the notable omission of “Knockin’ On Your Back Door.” It’s worth noting that some tracks appeared in alternate versions; for instance, the compilation featured the single edit of “Burn” and a 1996 live recording of “Perfect Strangers”.
