Seasoned musicians Tully McCully and Gordon Mackay have unveiled their powerful new EP, The Quest Trilogy, released on 14 November 2025. This three-part saga deepens their evolving journey as McCully/Mackay, one of South Africa’s most distinctive progressive rock duos and an offshoot of McCully Workshop.
With striking artwork by Laura McCullagh (Tully’s daughter), The Quest Trilogy showcases the duo’s hallmark style: instrumentally complex arrangements, fantasy-driven vocal narratives from Tully, and Gordon’s virtuoso electric keyboard performance. Importantly, this is not programmed music – it is live, performance-based recording, capturing the immediacy and energy of their collaboration.
The duo’s creative process remains consistent. Tully lays down the foundation tracks – drums, bass, guitar, and vocals – while Gordon, “using some of the stone’s magic,” as McCully describes, brings the songs to life with layered textures and cinematic flair.
This is a saga told in three parts. The Quest is the story of a band of mystics who embark on an epic journey searching for a stone that promises eternal life. Through their adventures, they eventually learn the stone has been shattered into grains of sand and scattered across the world – but this enables everyone to share some of its power.
