Review

New Ireland LP was worth the wait

She Speaks To Me — John Ireland — (CBK 7013)

by Peter Feldman

John Ireland, who caused such a flutter last year in local pop circles with his “I Like …” single hit, has waited a whole year to unveil his new album.

And, in my humble opinion, this wait has been well worth it. John recorded “She Speaks To Me” in a studio in Stockholm, and the electronic pyrotechnics he employs here have never sounded better. His writing, too, shows a perceptive line in thinking, and his word imageries are quite masterful.

The tone of the album is a carefully balanced piece of work; doom-laden songs such as “Neutron” are mixed with cheery, tongue-in-cheek ditties such as “The Office Party.” He also includes another sensuous song, “Loving You Is So Easy,” which roughly fits the same rhythmic mold as “I Like …”

But the point of the album is that it doesn’t fit into a specific bag but illuminates John Ireland as a total all-rounder.
